A villa entrance on a rainy day is more than an attractive arrangement beside the door. One person may arrive carrying shopping, another may need to change shoes, and a visitor may not know where to leave a coat. Before choosing a cupboard or bench, walk through these few real minutes on the plan. The aim is to define the activities the entrance must support; its final form and dimensions need project-specific design.

Describe an ordinary arrival and a busy one

For an ordinary day, identify who uses the entrance and what they carry. Then describe a busier situation, such as the family returning from an outing. Do bags need to be put down temporarily? Does someone need to sit to change shoes? These questions explain why a particular item might be needed. They also help keep the layout from becoming a collection of furniture without a clear purpose.

Locate three activities on the plan

Identify the place for changing or leaving shoes, the location for outerwear and a temporary landing point for bags. You do not need to buy a separate item for every activity; review how the functions relate first. IKEA’s hallway examples also show combinations of shoe storage, hanging space and seating. The examples illustrate functions, rather than establish the dimensions or products required for your villa.

Separate everyday capacity from visitors

Do not assume that the family’s permanent belongings and visitors’ belongings need identical arrangements. If larger gatherings are occasional, a planned temporary arrangement can be considered. Record what will be put away afterwards and which parts need to remain available every day. A temporary bag or shoe storage area should have an identified role, rather than be treated as an unexplained empty spot on the drawing.

Review opening doors and looking after the space

  • How do the entrance door and cupboard doors relate when open?
  • Where does a second person move while someone is seated?
  • How are shoes or clothing awaiting attention separated from ready-to-use belongings?
  • What is needed to access and clean the storage area?

Discuss floor selection and construction details with the designer using the actual conditions of use and product information. Appearance alone does not resolve technical questions about a finish’s suitability for the entrance. Keep these decisions open until the necessary information has been reviewed.

Compare layouts with one short scenario

Review two proposals using the same sequence: arrive with a bag, put belongings down, change shoes and continue indoors. Note where pauses or conflicts occur. Add the result to the villa design brief. Explore villa design and construction management to coordinate this decision with the overall plan.
