A Villa Terrace in Rainy Weather: Seating, Routes and Cushion Storage

A villa terrace needs to work beyond the photograph taken on a sunny day. When the weather changes, what happens to the seating, where do the cushions go and how is the door to the living room used? In a rainy location, these everyday questions help explain both the furniture choice and the allocation of space.

Choose a principal use first

Tea for two, a family meal and seating a larger group require different arrangements. On a small terrace, avoid assuming all three activities will happen at once. Review seats in use, rather than only showing chairs tucked beneath a table. The route between indoors and outdoors also needs attention; making the table fit on the drawing is only part of the task.

Give temporary belongings an identified place

Review the entrance door, its opening direction and the items moved when furniture is put away. Planters, trays and folding chairs should not be assigned an unexplained location “for later”. If a canopy or lightweight roof is proposed, discuss its actual coverage, rain direction and technical details with the designer. A covering alone does not establish that the entire terrace stays dry.

Identify dry storage for cushions

The plan therefore needs more than a box: consider drying space, storage capacity and the route used to carry cushions inside.

Include routine access and maintenance

Furniture should not conceal places that need inspection or cleaning.
